How to Choose Furniture Styles That Reflect Your Style

Today, you have more choices than ever when it comes to furniture styles. Manufacturers are creating more interesting designs in a wider variety of colors. So, how do you find the style that fits your style the best – especially if you’re not even sure what your style is? Well, relax. Here are some tips to help you choose furniture styles that are the right fit your own taste and home décor.

A Picture’s Worth 1000 Words

bring photos of furniture styles

One thing I suggest is to bring in pictures of the room you are getting furniture for. Bring your phone, iPad or camera shots in with you. And then bring any pictures you saw online, in a magazine or of any other things you like.  That will help us work with you to put together a look that is your style. Also, if there are any things you want to keep in your room, bring in pictures of them, as well. That will help us guide you to where you want to go, using what’s there and incorporating it into a style or look. Our design consultants can help you build a room around the piece or pieces you intend to keep in your room. I once did a whole room designed around a funky Swedish ottoman and a piece of art that the  couple were keeping. We built a whole living room around those pieces – and it turned out to be just their style.

Some people don’t know where to start when it comes finding their style. That’s where spending some time walking through the store with a design consultant and just talking about what you like and don’t like can really help. We’ll listen to you and ask questions as we go. Do you like the look of this? Is this more of what would fit into your home? What do you do on your sofa? Do you sit on it or lay on it? How are you going to use it? Questions like that can help us figure out where to start. Then, we can start giving you suggestions, give you ideas and put together a visual that lets you start to see and eventually choose furniture styles fit together and fit your own personal look. We can show you how a different chair or pillows or fabrics are going to change the look of a room. By playing with different combinations, you can start to get a feel for what furniture styles suit you best.

Start with One Piece and Build from There

A good place to start, is with the biggest piece and build from there. So, if you’re talking living or family room, that would be the sofa. Figure out if you want it to be a reclining sofa or a stationary one. Do you want leather of fabric? Let us show you the options that are available. Maybe you want to stick with a neutral color for the sofa, but then you can add some color and texture to the room with the smaller pieces. After deciding on your sofa, we can start adding your chairs, your pillows, your end tables and cocktail table, your rugs and even look at lamps and pictures. Because even if you’re not looking to buy the whole group – putting it together helps you visualize the different furniture styles and what you can do with them. The process would be the same for other rooms. Start with the biggest piece and build around it. So, if you already know your style, we can help you choose furniture styles that will fit what you’re looking for. But if you’re not sure or just don’t know, that’s okay too. Follow these steps and you’ll soon have a look that’s totally you.
